Dr. Ouwei Wang graduated from UC Berkeley with a Ph.D. in Microbiology from Professor John Coates lab. After spending several years elucidating the molecular mechanisms of microbial perchlorate respiration, he transitioned his research focus from environmental microbiology to industrial fermentation. He leveraged the fundamental knowledge of microbial metabolism to build applied molecular tools, including a contamination control technology that prevents microbial contamination in bioreactors. After graduating from UC Berkeley, Ouwei founded Pow Bio, a startup company that provides intelligent fermentation services to the growing synthetic biology industry. Pow Bio helps synthetic biology companies to test, validate, and optimize their fermentation processes and to produce their first kilogram of product.
