Ian Peter Busuulwa is a biotechnologist with over six years of experience in science policy and communication, working with both governmental and non-governmental organizations. He got interested in synthetic biology during a public policy fellowship with Ginkgo Bioworks in 2021. Following that, he joined Synbio Africa as a Policy and Communications Officer and the iGEM Community as a Science Communication Steering Group member.Ian has researched, presented, and spoken on biotech regulation, science communication, biosafety, and biosecurity at numerous national and international forums. His current research is on the commercialization of genetically modified crops in Africa as part of his Generation Fellowship at the California-based Breakthrough Institute. Ian has a Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology from Makerere University in Kampala and a Master of Science in Biotechnology from KIIT University in India. Additionally, he leads the policy and communication efforts of Synbio Africa's Global Catastrophic Biological Risks Initiative, which aims to increase Africa's capacity to prevent and manage GCBRs.
