I am a Professor of Infectious Diseases at the University of Bristol. My research focuses on understanding the interplay between bacteria and the host during colonisation and the progression of disease. Through understanding key mechanisms used by bacteria to interact with human cells, my research identifies approaches to develop vaccines, prevent transmission and rapidly identify microbial species. I am currently Head of School for Cellular and Molecular Medicine and values the training of the next generation of research scientists. Of relevance here, is that Bacterial identification is very important across many settings such as medicine, food, and agriculture. Current technology can be slow, inaccurate, and expensive. Our interdisciplinary research has developed a nanoparticle-based technology offering accurate and affordable results in real time. Moreover, the technology can be used at point of need. Designed for doctors, farmers, food manufacturers, and safety inspectors. our technology can provide accessible bacterial testing capabilities globally.
