Dr. Betty Lee works at the Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security on biosecurity and non-proliferation issues. She is the Designated Federal Officer for the Materials and Equipment Technical Advisory Committee. She educates industries and academia about the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and participates in outreach. She organized the first Emerging Technologies-Brain Computer Interface (BCI) Conference in 2023 for industry and government representatives. She reviews export licenses for biological items and other dual use items and technology, commodity jurisdictions of items, writes U.S. government proposals to the multi-lateral regime called the Australia Group which promotes non- proliferation of bioweapons and chemical weapons. Dr. Lee participates as a judge for the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) jamboree on an annual basis. In addition, she participated in the policy review of the Executive Order titled “Optimizing the Security of Biological Select Agents and Toxins in the United States” signed by President Obama on July 2, 2010. Betty Lee has a PhD from Dartmouth Medical School, USA, M.S. Clinical Chemistry from the University of Windsor, Canada and M.S. Biochemistry from LSU Medical Center, USA. Dr. Lee completed her postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Health, USA.
