Amino Labs, Inc, and many customers are excited to broadcast Amino Labs’ first official product release - the DNA Playground™ - the “Easy-Bake Oven” for biology.

DNA Playground™ is easy to use equipment for exploring the world of genetic engineering. The DNA Playground™ is unlike all other existing lab tools in that it is designed for non-scientists, makers, tinkerers, and students. Its designed for readers like you, and your children.

The DNA Playground™ is like an “Easy-Bake Oven for genetic engineering”, says Chief Science Officer Justin Pahara. “It is so easy to use that your children can reliably do university level stuff in school or at home and it costs less than an iPad.”

“I’m so excited that young kids, can do the same experiments that I could only start doing when I was 20 years old and in university - these kids are going to be so well equipped - they are going to become the Bill Gates of the biotechnology world.”

Considering that many of the biggest names in technology, like Bill Gates, have declared that having access to computers at a young age was critical to them having the skills and knowledge to change the world, biotechnology is no different. The DNA Playground™ is designed to offer the same scenario for the world of biotechnology and genetic engineering.

"The biotechnology revolution is about where the computer revolution was in 1980, but instead of personal computers, 21st-century whiz kids are tinkering with what makes bacteria tick. This kind of fun and creative play sets up future scientists to cure diseases, save the environment, and feed the world. The future belongs to 6 year olds and the DNA Playground is a tool to help them get good at creating it," says Dr. Raymond McCauley, Chair of Digital Biology at Singularity University, in Silicon Valley.

Some of the early testers of the DNA Playground™ were teens at home. Felix Deemer, a teenager in Sri Lanka had thoughts of being a geneticist but didn’t have any idea of what it was really like. His DNA Playground™ and Engineer-it Kit™ made the 13,900-kilometer journey from Toronto, Canada to Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. Felix was able to genetically engineer E. coli bacteria to manufacture a blue pigment, quite beautiful on its own, but also happens to be a precursor for an anti-cancer compound.

Michael Hirsch, a science teacher at Acera School in Winchester, MA has been using Amino Labs equipment to teach genetic engineering and biomanufacturing to his grade 6-9 students. Michael notes, “Practical hands-on skills are essential to engaging people in science and the Bioexplorer™ (DNA Playground’s “older sibling”) has made it easy for them to see what is possible in the growing field of genetic engineering."

Magda Pop, a science teacher that now runs the geekStarter program at MindFuel, which facilitates K-12 hands-on education in synthetic biology and robotics brought multiple DNA Playground™ kits to various high school teams that participate in the International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) competition.

“I used a DNA Playground™ and Engineer-it Kit™, and it worked the first time - I had never thought genetic engineering could be so easy and fun.”

The teachers that participate in the MindFuel program, describe the reliability and reproducibility of using a DNA Playground™. Luc Arvisais, a Junior/High school teacher in Alberta, Canada:

“Amino Labs is the most reliable genetic engineering experience we have had. Our students enjoy the experience so much that they regularly ask to share this technology by demonstrating with bio-painting events. Superior student usability of the DNA Playground is key to their successful experiences.”

Further, Luc, mentions that Amino Labs DNA Playground and Engineer-it Kits are causing a stir. “Students have joined our iGEM team based on the outreach that we have done with Amino Labs kits. Our grade seven students have six years to grow in synthetic biology – this is an ideal consequence of Amino Labs facilitating an entry point!”

With hundreds of teachers, parents, teens, makers, artists, designers and curious using Amino Labs technology, Julie Legault, CEO of Amino Labs, adds:

“The last few years of developing the DNA Playground™ and associated products have been exhausting, but we are so delighted that our products are living up to the expectations of our international customer base. It is extremely difficult to get genetic engineering working outside of world-class climate-controlled labs, and I believe that we are the first company to achieve international success in this arena.”

The demand for learning genetic engineering with family, friends, and peers is growing rapidly. Don’t miss out for Christmas - Get going with a starter set at amino.bio and learn to program biology at home with your family and friends.
