Synthetic Biology Researcher – Developer (Term BioNet Fellow)

MITRE
United States

MITRE is seeking to hire several code-fluent Synthetic Biology/Biotechnology Researcher-Developers to partner with MITRE’s professional software engineering team to develop the BioNet: a networked ecosystem connecting Synthetic Biology projects, practitioners, and providers through standardized interfaces. The successful candidates will contribute to developing and using prototypes of BioNet to conduct Synthetic Biology projects. This work will help refine, test and evaluate, and demonstrate BioNet concepts and implementations. These positions will be co-located with academic partners in the Boston area. One project area is to develop and use BioNet workflows to underpin systematic approaches in biosensor science.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work with MITRE Software Engineering to advance and refine the BioNet domain-specific language, standardized information and material flows, and the planning-interchange-transaction workflow platforms.
  • Develop standardized, modular, well-specified workflows for organism engineering using the BioNet.
  • Advance synthetic biology interoperability and reusability by making project and workflow steps systematically available through BioNet.
  • Liaise between MITRE and BioNet partners.
  • Propose, develop, and execute collaborative projects using the prototype BioNet platform; for instance, developing concrete demonstrations that lead to innovations, publications, or intellectual property development.

This important research will directly contribute to MITRE's public interest mission of Solving Problems for a Safer WorldÒ. BioNet prototyping will demonstrate programmatic workflows of interoperable and networked capabilities to realize reusable Synthetic Biology solutions. We are committed to transcending artisanal solutions to make biology as technology more accessible. The successful candidates will work on a team who are building a prototype biosensor studio based on BioNet in partnership with the Sustainability Initiative at the Wyss Institute.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Synthetic Biology or adjacent field (Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Computational Biology, others) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Publication record in Synthetic Biology or adjacent fields.
  • Experience developing research-grade software.
  • Experience solving problems with scripting languages and scientific function libraries.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently design and pursue novel research.
  • Hands-on knowledge of Synthetic Biology development tools, including laboratory procedures, experimental processes, analytical techniques, data processing methods, and design tools.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Conceptual understanding of Systems Engineering principles applied to biotechnology workflows.
  • Experience developing interfaces, including application programming interfaces (APIs).
  • Experience with:
    • Analytical chemistry
    • Cell-free systems
    • Clinical applications
    • Environmental applications
  • Experience with biosensors as measurement tools, research tools, and elements of Synbio projects.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary and cross-organizational projects.
  • Experience authoring technical research and development proposals.
