Next Rung Technology (NRT) is a talented and motivated team of 15-20 engineers, analysts, and consultants, focused on the commercialization of sustainable technologies. We provide engineering

consulting and execution services to organizations from varied industries ; we have expertise in energy, renewables, biotechnology, next-generation foods and materials, and water/wastewater treatment. We care about supporting our clients in varied ways from process and engineering design, product design, feasibility studies, process improvements, engineering procurement support, project execution and

strategic guidance, start-up and commissioning planning and support, techno-economic analyses, ad hocextension of client teams, and supplying bad puns. At NRT we value doing work that interests us in

places we like to go and with people we like to work with. NRT is headquartered in Greentown Labs in Somerville, MA with team members working remotely throughout the US (mostly Northeast).

We are seeking to add a senior-level chemical/process engineer to our team. This role would contribution a range of projects to interface with our clients to identify needs, develop solutions, conduct the engineering tasks necessary to meet their technical requirements, and provide leadership for the successful execution of projects. Candidates will ideally bring hands-on industry experience, experience working with start-ups/developing companies, creative thinking, a passion for creating excellent P&IDs and engineering deliverables and work and play well with others.

 

Responsibilities and Duties:

 

All of our projects represent FOAK (first of a kind) or scale-up and commercialization of developing technologies for exceptional companies working on important technologies. Flexibility in working with clients and technologies is a must as well as:

 

o  Work with clients on developing project scope of work and providing the deliverables for these projects

o  Provide the role of technical lead or team member for a design team, capable of executing all required project deliverables

o   Develop equipment specifications and documentation

o  Develop equipment and installation cost estimates

o  Develop descriptions of operation for the process

o   Develop bid packages and construction packages

o  Process design:

o   Process modeling (simulation or spreadsheet-based)

o  Mass and energy balances

o   Heat transfer calculations

o  Fluid flow calculations

o   Development of Process Flow Diagrams and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams in AutoCAD

o  Develop general arrangement drawings

o  Client & Vendor Site visits (as needed)

o   Support vendor FATs, reviews, and trials

o  Visit customer sites for data acquisition, meetings, and installation/start-up as needed

o   Participate in building and growing company culture and values via

 

•       Collaborating with Project Leads for proper allocation and tracking of resources

•       Lending technical expertise and insight to the team when requested

•      Supporting sales proposals, attend intro meets, and field incoming inquiries for potential clients

•       Mentoring and providing guidance to more junior staff

 

We also do a broad array of impactful sector-wide industry evaluations and thought leadership, guiding major government programs and generally catalyzing the transition to a more sustainable economy.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

Deeply motived to help to provide engineering support to scale sustainable technologies

o   BS in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering

o   8+ years of experience in a design or process engineering role

o  Proven ability to lead cross-functional engineering teams. Strong team player and contributor.

o  Experience in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food & beverage, bio-processing industries preferred

o   Hands on experience in a plant/manufacturing environment

o   Excellent communication and organizational skills

 

We are open to applicants who are interested in both variable hours (employee or contractor)or full-time roles depending on mutual fit and interest. We have a flexible work from home policy, but there is a strong preference for candidates who can work out of our office space at Greentown Labs, to support team development and be a senior technical presence at a minimum of 2 days a week. Hours and schedule are negotiable, and compensation will be based on experience.
