News, trends, and stories from the synthetic biology industry

Hi all,

Thank you to Strateos for sponsoring this week's newsletter. The company is combining automation in biology and chemical synthesis while leveraging big data and machine learning to enable biological discovery at unprecedented speed, reproducibility, and cost-effectiveness. Learn more at

Last week, I joined Quarantime for a conversation on why we must move to a bioeconomy where nature itself helps us manufacture energy, incubate clean water systems, grow alternatives to plastics, and brew rather than construct buildings.

In funding news, Sherlock Biosciences received a $5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to advance the INSPECTR platform for COVID-19 self-test. “By creating the very first diagnostic tests that do not require complex instruments and can be deployed anywhere, especially in low-resource settings, Sherlock is poised to make a wide-ranging and powerful impact on health outcomes,” said James J. Collins, co-founder and board member of Sherlock Biosciences.

Can synthetic biology make mosquito-borne diseases a thing of the past? In a recent announcement, DARPA awarded Ginkgo Bioworks, Azitra, Latham BioPharm Group, and Florida International University (FIU) a contract of up to $15 million to create a novel, long-lasting mosquito repellent using engineered microbes.

Paradromics CEO Matt Angle speaks with Stuart Cogan, Vanessa Tolosa, Thomas Steiglitz, and Loren Reith about how to protect neural implants from the harsh environment of the body. This discussion is all about longevity and endurance, and, fittingly, it’s almost 2 hours long.

LanzaTech and TeselaGen Biotechnology sign new multi-year deal to advance carbon remediation via biological processes. The companies signed a 5-year deal to reduce the human carbon footprint using synthetic biology, extending their relationship through 2025.

Have a great week,
