News, trends, and stories from the synthetic biology industry

Hi all,

I began this year’s SynBioBeta conference with a Leaps Talk with Tristan Harris, co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology and star of the eye-opening Netflix documentary, The Social Dilemma. The discussion was introduced by Jurgen Eckhardt, head of Leaps by Bayer, Bayer’s impact investment division, and SynBioBeta partner.

In our talk, Harris explained social media’s role in undermining basic facts. For Big Tech algorithms, embellished, salacious, and downright untruthful content is the most profitable. Companies like Facebook operate in the Attention Economy, enticing users to stay engaged with the platform for the benefit of advertisers. Having seen what happened to social media, I asked Harris what advice he could offer to the biotech community. Read my Forbes article about what he had to say.

Optimize Your Workflow: Bottlenecks And Solutions In The Design, Build, & Test Phases: People working in synthetic biology often discuss the design-build-test cycle for engineering new biological systems, but reality is often far messier than that. Problems with reproducibility of data and difficulties in building the correct biological constructs often unnecessarily lengthen this cycle, slowing the progress toward commercialization.

Join us on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 11:00am-1:00pm PST for a discussion with experts in the different areas of the design-build-test cycle on the issues they have encountered and how they fixed them. Panelists include experts from IDT, SCIEX and Beckman Coulter Life Sciences.
