How is
Rubi Labs
using biology to make the world a better place?

To combat climate change, the world desperately needs affordable and scalable solutions rooted in cutting-edge science and technology to reinvent the ways industries operate. More than many other industries, fashion is a big culprit speeding us toward further environmental catastrophe: It is currently the third most CO2 polluting supply chain on the planet, mainly from textile production. While major brands are setting ambitious goals to reduce their carbon emissions by 2030, the reality is that until there’s a way to produce sustainable clothing while also maintaining profit margins, we’ll stay where we are. That’s where Rubi comes in. Rubi helps fashion brands achieve their sustainability commitments, increase customer loyalty, and ultimately increase revenue through its patent-pending, cell-free biocatalytic process, starting with lyocell. Rubi makes the same textiles fashion brands already use today, through its carbon-negative, zero-water, zero-land process: Rubi captures CO2 from the waste streams of manufacturing facilities using its proprietary enzyme system which can capture and convert CO2 from a gas input at any concentration. The CO2 is then converted into cellulose, which can then be used to create viscose-based yarn. By utilizing enzymes as the catalyst, Rubi is able to turn 100% of CO2 inputted to the end product with zero waste. As Rubi grows, it plans to provide a carbon-removal service to manufacturing facilities to further reduce their carbon emissions. A pair of jeans made with Rubi fabric removes CO2 from the atmosphere, and consumes virtually no water or land.
