Doug Hershberger – Associate Director, Bioinformatics
Over the course of his career, Dr. Hershberger has worked for, or collaborated closely with many of the leading industrial and renewable chemicals and fuels companies, including Dow Chemical, Genomatica, LS9, and Codexis. As associate director of the Bioinformatics group at Algenol Biofuels, his goal is to accelerate the development of cyanobacterial strains for ethanol production.
Doug directs the construction of synthetic biology platforms enabling data driven strain and protein evolution. He was a key force in a collaboration between Genomatica and Dow applying metabolic modeling, genomics, proteomics and transcriptomics to the Pfenex protein production platform, and as associate director of the Bioinformatics group at Algenol Biofuels, is applying this technology to the development of cyanobacterial strains for ethanol production in their DIRECT TO ETHANOL(R) platform.
Doug received his PhD in Microbiology from the University of Illinois Medical Center in the lab of Al Chakrabarty. This experience gave him a solid grounding in molecular biology and metabolic pathways. As a post-doc at the University of Minnesota, Doug was essential to the early growth and development of the University of Minnesota Biocatalysis/Biodegradation Database (UMBBD). He also co-authored a book on the “metabolic logic” of microbial pathways with his advisor Larry Wackett.
