Belinda Clarke – Lead Technologist

Technology Strategy Board

Belinda is the Lead Technologist for synthetic biology at the Technology Strategy Board, the UK’s innovation agency. Here, she has responsibility for the programme of activities designed to support the growth of a successful UK synthetic biology industry. Prior to that she was co-Director of ideaSpace at the University of Cambridge, a pre-incubator supporting early stage ventures, and before that was responsible for the health and life sciences programme at the East of England Development Agency. She has been a biotechnology sector specialist International Trade Advisor for UK Trade and Investment, and also ran a company at the Norwich Research Park (NRP) aimed at brokering relationships between academia and industry and promoting the science of the NRP. She holds two Board positions and founded her own business in 2012.

Belinda has a first degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in plant biochemistry from the John Innes Centre, UK. She is a Fellow of the Society for Biology, a Chartered Biologist and a qualified business coach and mentor. She is a Nuffield Scholar following a research programme to study application of agricultural biotechnology in Africa. She also has 22 publications in peer-reviewed journals including Science, Nature Biotechnology and the Journal of Commercial Biotechnology.
