In news this week: Thought for Food announced the ten teams of young entrepreneurs developing innovative solutions for food & agriculture that have been selected as Finalists in the 2018 TFF Challenge. How will food and agriculture be disrupted by synthetic biology in the coming years? Christine Gould, TFF’s Founder, will be speaking about it at SynBioBeta 2018 on October 1-3: get your early bird ticket by tomorrow.

Intrexon, Epimeron and the University of Calgary reported a huge step in a technology for the commercial production of pain-killing opiates by yeast fermentation, and Calyxt closed a $60.9 million public offering to advance its gene editing technology for agriculture.

A University of Calgary-led research team has discovered the gene for a new protein crucial for producing a compound in opium poppy plants used to make opiate pain-killing drugs.

Finally this week, SynBioBeta columnist Natalie Slivinski ponders how the synthetic biology community can transform science’s public perception from a mythical, secretive, and even elitist enterprise into an engaged, grassroots movement that enlists and empowers the public to help give voice to science.
