Scientist, Special Partnerships: Ginkgo Bioworks – Boston, MA

Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe’s growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms. Today, our foundry is developing over 40 different organisms to make different products across multiple industries.

We’re seeking a highly motivated and collaborative Scientist, Special Partnerships to support a key partner’s broad portfolio of R&D projects that are active in Ginkgo’s foundry. We have many projects happening at once: some small, some large and multi-year, running in different areas of the foundry. This role will be key to the success of all projects, by helping to ensure their seamless execution from start to finish. Reporting directly to the Program Director who manages this key partner’s portfolio, the Scientist, Special Partnerships will lead the initial technology transfer, support onboarding and progression within the foundry, and assist as needed to drive these projects to on-time completion.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the planning, execution, and tech transfers of all key partner projects
  • Prepare technical reports for Ginkgo and partner technical teams
In addition, support a variety of foundry services across the partner work pipeline, with emphasis on:
  • Enzyme and/or whole cell assay development
  • Analytical assay development
  • High-throughput screening
  • Data analysis
  • Strain, sample, and information management
  • Technology transfer of project materials and methods between key partners and Ginkgo, including travel as needed to our partner’s locations to enable high fidelity information exchange

Desired Experience and Capabilities:

  • PhD in Synthetic Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a related field, with 0-4 years of post-graduation experience
  • Hands-on laboratory experience in at least 3 of the following areas:  enzyme characterization and assay development, benchtop fermentation, analytical techniques (HPLC, LCMS, GCMS), omics (genomics, metabolomics, proteomics), and microbiology
  • Experience working with laboratory automation and Python scripting language a plus
  • Ability to travel (up to 50%) to our partner sites as needed
  • Excellent organization, prioritization, time management, and planning skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Team player mentality, with a commitment to success and getting the job done well
  • Approachability, solutions orientation, and ability to maintain composure in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong desire to learn new things, with an extremely positive attitude and high level of enthusiasm

We also feel it’s important to point out the obvious here – there’s a serious lack of diversity in our industry and it needs to change. Our goal is to help drive that change. Ginkgo is deeply committed to diversity, equality, and inclusion in all of its practices, especially when it comes to growing our team. We hope to continue to build a company whose culture promotes inclusion and embraces how rewarding it is to work with engineers from all walks of life. Making biology easier to engineer is a tough nut to crack – we can’t afford to leave any talent untapped.

It is the policy of Ginkgo Bioworks to provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and employment applicants.
