Triton Algae Innovations Ltd., an innovative future-food technology company, is seeking a biochemical engineer for the Fermentation Process Engineer position at our San Diego, CA location. The individual will be responsible for establishing strategies, techniques and approaches in to developing and improving scalable fermentation and downstream process technology for a variety of strains and products. This individual will assist in technology transfer, scale-up, and deployment of technology at commercial scale facilities. Further, the individual will work closely with our strain development team on scale-up, scale-down and strain selection. A proven track record of providing leadership to develop scalable process technology is important. Candidates who can demonstrate previous high performance developing industrial fermentation and downstream processes are desired. This position will work under the guidance of senior process engineer. .
Facilitates the design and implementation of processes from the laboratory through pilot plant to commercial scale-up and technology transfer under the guidance of a senior process engineer.
Develop, guide and conduct experimental projects to achieve company goals; analyze and present fermentation & process technology data.
Lead and/or support technology transfer & operations at external piloting and manufacturing sites.
Execute fermentation and process technology experiments at 250 mL – 100L scale in Triton’s fermentation/process pilot lab.
Contribute to design, selection, install and operation of new equipment.
Interface between multiple functional groups at Triton to ensure technology developed is scalable and meets commercial & project goals.
Participate in process evaluations through the analysis and interpretation of lab and demonstration scale data, technical literature, and process simulations. Translate this information into equipment and process specifications, and provide recommendations for further R&D and intellectual property opportunities.
Mentor and/or manage junior level personnel.
Write R&D reports, SOP’s and technology transfers documents

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Master’s or PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Bio-process Engineering, Microbiology or related field, required direct relevant fermentation experience; preferred 2+ years industrial experience.
Experience with design, development, optimization, scale-up, and technology transfer of industrial fermentation-based production processes.
Experience developing heterotrophic fermentation processes for yeast, algae or fungi
Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of fermentor control hardware/software.
Proven ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, etc.).
Ability to travel to current and prospective partner sites (typically less than 25%, with periods of higher frequency).
