Computational Biologist: Colorifix, Norwich, UK


Colorifix is a startup bringing novel, sustainable and environmentally friendly processes to the textile dyeing industry to eliminate the use of hazardous chemicals, and also give large savings in water and energy use. Colorifix has won awards in both synthetic biology and fashion, and our technology has been publicly displayed in the Future of Fashion section of the Fashioned from Nature exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

We are developing a computational-aided biology (CAB) package to assist our workflow at every stage: pigment discovery, strain engineering, colour characterization and quality control. The package is there to help design experiments, control business process, collect data from users and lab equipment, generate reports, optimise operations and more, hence it is an essential part of our business.

Role description:

We seek an outstanding individual to contribute to the overall design of our CAB package, as well as develop stand-alone plugins for specific computational biology applications, e.g. experiment design, biological modeling, data analysis modeling, lab equipment/hardware integration. Relevant experience should ideally include: development of biological tools using Python, handling and analysis of DNA sequences and lab automation. The successful candidate will benefit from flexible hours and some remote working, and will contribute considerably to company development.

Location: Norwich Research Park, Norwich

Qualifications: Master’s (or equivalent) in (bio)engineering or a relevant subject.

Essential skills:

  • Python
  • Software development (2y+ experience)
  • Data analysis (basic stats, linear algebra)
  • Biological data handling ( sequences, gene expression)
  • Basic understanding of synthetic biology design-build-test cycle

Desirable skills:

  • Workflow modeling / execution tools, BPMN
  • Lab automation / programming liquid-handling robots
  • Knowledge of Dash, Flask and BioPython libraries

Remuneration: Annual salary of £35,000–45,000, depending on experience. A stock option scheme will be made available in which the successful candidate will be able to participate.
