Janet Bainbridge – Head of Agricultural Technology

On 1st August 2013 Janet was appointed Head of Agricultural Technology (Inward Investment) for UK Trade & Investment with responsibility for delivery of the investment imperatives within the UK agricultural technology strategy. Formerly a UKTI Technology Sector specialist, helping overseas businesses to invest in the UK and supporting them following their investment. In the past 2 fiscal years, Janet was the top investment specialist, (number and value) for new investments into the UK.
She is a member of the Synthetic Biology Leadership Council.
Awarded the OBE in 2000-’For Services to Science and Technology’, she has a very broad range of expertise and experience in the Food, Chemical and agriculture sectors and has been employed in senior industry positions. She has also been the CEO if a successful small company and was a founder member of the AHDB board and a member of the Potato Council Board
Her an academic background as a biochemical engineer , was recognised by a Chair in Biotechnology and Food Science ( with over 100 scientific publications )
She is a UK national expert and advisor to UK Government in the regulatory framework relating to genetic modification and of the regulation of novel and functional foods and chemicals. She has worked in Brussels as a regulatory and policy specialist and advisor to DG Science and acted as an Advisor to the Scottish government (agri- strategy) and to the research councils and TSB.
Prior to following an academic and Government advisory career, she was the Head Research Microbiologist at J Sainsbury Limited and has maintained close links with businesses across the entire food chain.
Janet has delivered a large portfolio of consultancy and non-executive roles in agricultural, chemical, the food and pharmaceutical industries bridging the gap between public and private sectors. Her passion is to ensure that Innovation develops to yield commercial and societal benefit and helping businesses to facilitate and deliver this aim.
